A CFD aided hydraulic turbine design methodology applied to Francis turbines

Abstract: Francis type turbines are commonly used in hydropower generation. Spiral case, stay vanes, guide vanes, runner and draft tube are the main components of the turbine. Available net head and discharge values determine the initial dimensions of these parts according to theoretical and experimental data. In this study, a design methodology is described to optimize the design by integrating in-house Matlab codes and commercial CFD codes. CFD is widely used to solve complex three-dimensional (3D) flows occurring in … Show more

“…The design methodology used for the CFD-aided design of hydraulic turbines is explained in detail in Ayli et al (2015). In the present study, parameter studies were performed for four different existing HEPP turbine runners (Akin et al, 2013;Ayancik et al, 2014;Ayli et al, 2015) in order to obtain generalized results that are valid for all Francis turbine runners. The turbines investigated in this study are numbered Turbine 1 to Turbine 4 for ease of reference and their general performance values are presented in Table 2.…”

“…Water leaves the runner at minimum pressure, once it releases its energy. The draft tube provides a connection between the runner exit and the tailwater level [13][14]. [15] Pelton Turbines: Pelton turbine is an impulse type turbine, which extracts energy from the water by converting the available head to the kinetic energy.…”

“…The efficiency of Kamienna HEPP increased from 75% to 85%. Akin et al [7] developed a design methodology for Francis turbines. Overall turbine efficiency can reach up to 92.3% with their design methodology.…”
