A checklist of Rubiaceae species from Eastern Samar, Visayas, Philippines

Abstract: Samar Island is a center of botanical wealth throughout the Philippine archipelago. However, floristic knowledge of the island is deficient and most of its forested areas remain largely unexplored. Thus, floristic surveys of Rubiaceae members were made on Eastern Samar, located in Visayas, Philippines. Collections were conducted from June 2013 to June 2017 within 5 municipalities: Borongan, Balangkayan, Taft, Guiuan, and Llorente. In total, 59 species belonging to 31 genera representing 21 tribes of the family… Show more

“…Nonetheless, T. alejandroanus is currently known in two locations within the Samar Island Natural Park (SINP). The specimen collected in one of the locations (Mt Calbiga, Taft) dates back to 1948; the species has not been recollected in this locality since then, in spite of extensive botanical explorations made by the Philippine National Herbarium (1948–1996) in Samar and by the team which prepared the checklist of Eastern Samar Rubiaceae (Ordas et al ). The specimen notes indicate that T. alejandroanus was found on the ridge of a dipterocarp forest, a type of habitat that was exploited for timber prior to the legal declaration of SINP as a protected area in 2003.…”

“…Purposive sampling was employed in the study. The collection was done along and approximately 10 m adjacent to trails at the study sites (Ordas et al 2019). All plants having the characters of Rubiaceae were collected during their reproductive stages to ensure precise identification of species.…”

“…In the Philippines, few studies on this forest type have been conducted (Tolentino et al 2020). The presence of Rubiaceae species has been revealed in the limestone forests in the Philippines, particularly in Dinagat Island (Lillo et al 2019), Eastern Samar (Ordas 2019), Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape, Bohol (Aureo 2020), Paranas, Samar Island Natural Park (Villanueva et al 2021), Metropolitan Ilocos Norte Watershed Forest Reserve (Batuyong 2020). The high floral richness that has been recorded on this type of forest is still underestimated (Clements et al 2006;Tolentino et al 2020).…”
