We present an annotated checklist of the benthic marine and brackish algae of the Galician coasts (Spain) based on literature records and new collections. This checklist includes 618 species: 118 Cyanophyta, 296 Rhodophyta, 127 Ochrophyta, and 77 Chlorophyta. The number of specific, infraspecific taxa, and stages is 643: 121 Cyanophyta, 309 Rhodophyta, 135 Ochrophyta, and 79 Chlorophyta. Hyella caespitosa var. nitida, Calothrix fasciculata, Gracilariopsis longissima, Compsonema minutum, and Sphacelaria tribuloides are new records for Galicia, and there are also some new provincial records. We state the presence of each species for Lugo (Lu), A Coruña (Co), and Pontevedra (Po) provinces. The number of species found in Galicia is high, since 85% of the species recorded for the warm-temperate NE Atlantic Ocean grow in Galicia. Biogeographical comments comparing the Galician data with the neighboring areas of Britain and Ireland, Basque coast, Portugal, southern Iberian Peninsula, Canary Islands and Atlantic coast of Morocco are given. Finally, we present lists of cold-temperate, warm-temperate, Lusitanic Province endemics, and alien species growing in Galicia.

A checklist of Moroccan marine Rhodophyceae excluding the members of the Ceramiales, the largest order, based on both literature records and some original data, is presented. The distribution of each taxon for this region (12 Mediterranean and 26 Atlantic localities) is given. Using present-day taxonomy, 218 species, infraspecific taxa and life-history phases are accepted for the Moroccan coasts. Six new combinations are proposed: Phymatolithon calcareum (Pallas) W. H. First record of Rhodymenia holmesii (Rhodymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) for the Mediterranean Sea from Morocco

Background: The rhodymenialean red algal species Rhodymenia holmesii was collected in the lower intertidal zones from Dalya and Al-Hoceima (Northern Morocco, Mediterranean Sea). This represents the first record and description in the Mediterranean Sea. Results: Moroccan materiel was studied in detail and compared with other closely related species. Descriptions of the morphological features reveal thalli with flaccid blades, 8 cm long, regularly dichotomously branched and attached with stoloniferous holdfast. Anatomically, cortical region composed of 2-3 cell layers and medulla composed of 3-5 cell layers. Conclusions: This finding indicates that the biodiversity of the related sites is probably richer than generally thought, and other phycological studies will increase the known algal biodiversity of the region.
