A Circularly-Polarized-Reconfigurable Patch Antenna With Liquid Dielectric

Abstract: A circularly-polarized-reconfigurable patch antenna based on fluidic control method is proposed in this paper. A liquid dielectric, ethyl acetate, is introduced to change the substrate of a patch antenna from homogeneous to inhomogeneous. Two orthogonal fundamental transverse magnetic (TM) modes are excited with a 90° phase difference in order to produce circularly polarized (CP) radiation. Then, the polarization of the proposed patch antenna is switchable between left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and rig… Show more

“…The ability to realize miniature antennas using high permittivity liquid dielectrics and the ease of availability when compared to most costly liquid metals also make liquid dielectrics a prime candidate for interesting antenna designs [13]. Some of the works on antenna designs using liquid dielectrics can be found in [14][15][16][17][18]. For this design the dielectric liquid permittivity was chosen as 10.…”

“…RF modules are fabricated utilizing reconfigurable switched moreband antennas to serve various applications at remarkable frequency bands [12]. A Micromachined-switch based on reconfigurable surfaces is presented in the literature [13] Circularly-polarized reconfigurable patch antenna with liquid dielectric [14]. Manufacture of antennas integrated into RF-MEMS switches decreases the power loss and the parasitic impacts when contrasted with conventional solid-state switches.…”

“…By tuning the liquid status of the antenna, frequency/polarization/ radiation pattern reconfigurability can be achieved. [8][9][10][11] Interesting designs have been reported including a sea-water monopole Yagi-Uda antenna, 12 a transparent water horn antenna, 13 a water-load antenna, 9 a central dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) with two parasitic DRAs 14 and a wideband glass and liquid cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna. 15 Among the previously mentioned designs, liquid antennas face two main challenges: (1) limited working state (especially for pattern reconfigurable liquid antennas) and (2) liquid leakage or chemical reaction (as the feeding probe is directly inserted in the liquid).…”
