A citizen science supported study on seasonal diversity and monoflorality of pollen collected by honey bees in Austria

Abstract: Austrian beekeepers participated in the “C.S.I. Pollen” study as citizen scientists and collected pollen from honey bee colonies in hive mounted traps every three weeks from April to September in 2014 and 2015 to uncover the seasonal availability of pollen sources for bees. 1622 pollen samples were collected and analysed using palynological light microscopy to the lowest taxonomic level possible. For 2014 and 2015 combined, 239 pollen types from more than 85 families were detected. ‘Various unknown’ species, T… Show more

“…In addition to honey bee literature records, we also included the C.S.I. study, in which pollen from honey bee colonies were collected from 24 locations across Denmark, using hive mounted traps every third week from April to September in 2014 and 2015 [for detailed methods see 70 ]. Pollen in these samples were identified to species, genus, or family level.…”

“…The aim of our citizen science projects is to locate the non-native bee in Europe, with the support of the public (Ćetković et al, 2020;Lanner et al, 2020aLanner et al, , 2020b. Beekeepers are valuable participants in collaborative approaches, like citizen science projects (Brodschneider et al, 2019;Gratzer & Brodschneider, 2021). Many beekeepers feel close to nature, spend a lot of time outdoors, have a common interest in flying insects and a fair understanding of environmental processes.…”
