A Co-operative Numerical Analysis of Scotochromogenic Slowly Growing Mycobacteria

Abstract: A co-operative numerical taxonomic analysis of slowly growing scotochromogenic mycobacteria of Runyon's group I1 with no restrictions on numbers of characters contributed by individual participants, or on techniques employed to derive these characters, is reported. Of four scotochromogen clusters defined in this study, three were of named species (Mycobacterium Jlavescens, M. gordonae and M . scrofulaceum) and one, a small cluster of four strains, may represent a new species. Results from pooled data are compa… Show more

“…This is a report on that study, in which investigators from 18 different laboratories (coded A to R) participated. The investigation was carried out under the permissive philosophy and the other ground rules presented in the report of the prior study on scotochromogenic mycobacteria (Wayne et al 1971).…”

“…Participants studied the cultures using tests of their own choosing. As before (Wayne et al 1971)~ participants agreed not to withdraw their data regardless of the final result and agreed that no details of the techniques used would be presented at this stage. The individual batches of data were sent to the co-ordinators who recorded the relevant information into binary form for the numerical analyses.…”

“…paraffinicum' strain ATCC 12670 5IWGMT OES 90139. An early study of slowly growing scotochromogenic mycobacteria of Runyon's group II used 140 characters to develop an n6n matrix table to demonstrate clustering behaviour of the study species (Wayne et al, 1971). The IWGMT noted that cluster 4 included Mycobacterium scrofulaceum ATCC 19981 T and 'M.…”
