A Combined Study on the Use of the Child Behavior Checklist 1½–5 for Identifying Autism Spectrum Disorders at 18 Months

Abstract: The capacity of the Child Behavior Checklist 1½–5 (CBCL 1½–5) to identify children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at 18 months was tested on 37 children clinically referred for ASD and 46 children at elevated likelihood of developing ASD due to having an affected brother/sister. At 30 months the clinically referred children all received a confirmatory diagnosis, and 10 out of 46 siblings received a diagnosis of ASD. CBCL 1½-5 profiles were compared with a group of matched children with typical development… Show more

“…In this cohort, CBCL-ASP predicted subsequent doctor-diagnosed autism with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.92. 54 In the literature, the CBCL/1.5-5 pervasive developmental problems scale (CBCL-PDP), SDQ-peer and SDQ-prosocial have moderate to high accuracy in distinguishing preschoolers with ASD from those who are typically developing (AUC 0.92 55 , 0.82 and 0.77 56 ), respectively. CBCL-ASP has replaced CBCL-PDP to reflect changes in the DSM-5.…”

“…In this study, we focused on the Withdrawn Syndrome scale and the Pervasive Developmental Problems (PDP) scale, based on previous literature showing good sensitivity and specificity in differentiating ASD children and controls [ 35 , 36 ]. Thus, Withdrawn and PDP T-scores (mean = 50; SD = 10) were entered in the analyses, and higher scores indicate greater problems.…”

“…The child behavior checklist (CBCL) is one of the screening scales for assessing children's emotional and behavioral problems and is widely used to assess, collect, and rate children's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems [ 18 , 19 ]. The Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) is a 57-item scale commonly used in clinic to characterize the behavior of children aiming to screen and diagnose ASD [ 20 , 21 ].…”
