A Compact Annular Ring Microstrip Antenna for WSN Applications

Abstract: A compact annular ring microstrip antenna was proposed for a wireless sensor network (WSN) application in the 2.4 GHz band. In this paper the major considerations of the conformal antenna design were the compact size and the impact on antenna's performance of a steel installation base. By using a chip resistor of large resistance (120 Ω) the antenna size was reduced to 38% of that a conventional annular ring patch antenna. With the addition of the steel installation base the resonant frequency of the antenna i… Show more

“…Microstrip patch antennas have been proposed for sensing applications [ 21 , 22 ]. Abbosh reviewed the performance of an elliptical tapered slot antenna for UWB medical imaging [ 23 ] whose electrical dimensions were 0.52 λ × 0.52 λ at a lower frequency of 3.10 GHz.…”

“…Annular ring microstrip antenna has been used in many applications including for satellite communication [1], wireless sensor network (WSN) application [2] and also has been proposed for aircraft [3] and integrated GPS and SDARS automotive applications [4]. The concept is adopted widely to obtain ultra wide band operating frequency [5]- [7] and also for its circular polarization capability [1], [8], [9].…”

“…In recent years there has been considerable effort in the antenna application to suppress the surface wave and overcome the limitations of the antenna. The purpose of this paper is to propose a microstrip antenna which will increase the bandwidth without increasing its physical dimensions [1][2][3]. However, in some applications the small size conventional patch antenna is still too large, so research is still being focused on the miniaturization of the patch antenna over the years.…”
