A compact electrical capacitance tomography system

Abstract: Most existing electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) systems are designed using a 19" Eurocase and they are relatively expensive. To reduce the size and cost, a compact ECT system has been developed. It is based on a charge/discharge capacitance measuring circuit and a USB data acquisition (DAQ) unit from NI. It has 6 measurement channels and is housed in a box measuring 158×80×96 mm. The system hardware is operated by a laptop via a USB port. The software is written in LabVIEW and the image reconstruction sof… Show more

“…Since then, realization of the importance of ECT has extended research in the area to many other countries and various institutions worldwide. Research projects encompassing the ECT technique which include enhancement of the hardware systems [ 12 18 ], improvement of its image reconstruction techniques [ 19 – 26 ] and exploration for industrial applications [ 27 30 ], have evolved rapidly since the 1990s with tremendous progress achieved in the past decades.…”

“…However, most systems are not able to hand small variations of the concentration. The charge/discharge capacitance measurement circuit system is simple and low cost, but has drift problem and extremely slow response speed [2]. The electrostatic method based on electrostatic induction principle is vulnerable to the influence of the solid physical characteristics [3].…”
