A Comparative Land Use-Based Analysis of Noise Pollution Levels in Selected Urban Centers of Nigeria

Abstract: Growth in the commercialization, mobility and urbanization of human settlements across the globe has greatly exposed world urban population to potentially harmful noise levels. The situation is more disturbing in developing countries like Nigeria, where there are no sacrosanct noise laws and regulations. This study characterized noise pollution levels in Ibadan and Ile-Ife, two urban areas of Southwestern Nigeria that have experienced significant increases in population and land use activities. Eight hundred n… Show more

“…On the one side, it presents wide-ranging opportunities for socio-economic development, largely in the form of the creation of economies of scale, both internal and external, as well providing the requisite climate for the maximization of the micro-economies of agglomeration-sharing, matching and learning (Duranton and Puga, 2004). On the flip side, it presents many challenges, including stress on infrastructure, congestion, urban poverty, environmental degradation, food insecurity, and a host of other urban planning and management problems (Ravallion et al, 2007;Chen, 2007;Watson, 2009;Eigenbrod et al, 2011;Baloye and Palamuleni, 2015).…”

“…The emerging challenges of climate change, environmental degradation and resource depletion resulting from decades of rapid urbanization (Watson 2009), pose serious threats to public health, the continuous supply of essential eco-system services and food security (Eigenbrod et al 2011;Baloye and Palamuleni 2015).…”

“…One example is a posthoc analysis, which is used to compare mean difference between groups. Several remote sensing studies have used this method (Giraldo, et al, 2009;Jalili, 2013;Baloye & Palamuleni, 2015). Meanwhile, some other studies used summary statistics such as descriptive, means and variances or more complex summaries of seasonality and environmental variability in order to gather and understand particular subjects (Cringoli et al, 2004).…”
