Dental study models are essential records for orthodontic diagnosis, planning and treatment evaluations. As plaster models are prone to damage and loss, require storage space and inefficient to retrieve and transfer, digital models are been used to eliminate drawbacks of plaster model regarded as potential replacement of traditional plaster models. Aim: To compare the accuracy and reliability of linear measurements on digital models derived from Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) and three-dimensional (3D) laser scanned impressions with conventional plaster models. Objectives: i. To compare the accuracy and reliability of measurements made on Plaster and CBCT derived digital models. ii. To compare the accuracy and reliability of measurements made on plaster and 3-dimensional laser scanned impression models. iii. To compare the accuracy and reliability of measurements made on CBCT models and 3D laser scanned impression models. Materials and Methods: CBCT and plaster models will be prepared from 12 patients. Rubber base impressions will be scanned using 3D dental laser scanner. Landmarks will be marked and the linear measurements of all the three models will be compared using 3D software. Results: The derived data was subjected to ANOVA test, Post Hoc Tukey test, Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and Method Error to evaluate the reliability of repeated measurements. No significant difference was found between plaster models, CBCT models and impression scanned laser models. Conclusion: Plaster models, CBCT models and models obtained from laser scan of impressions are three different diagnostic records. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages. The present study shows that models obtained from laser scanned impressions are comparable to plaster models. The accuracy is adequate for initial diagnosis and treatment planning in clinical orthodontics

We evaluated the basic characteristics and efficacy of our newly developed patient fixation system for head and neck radiotherapy that uses a dedicated mouthpiece and dental impression materials. The present investigation demonstrated that with this system, the changes in the absorbed dose to water depending on the material of the mouthpiece were small, with a maximum of 0.32% for a 10-MV photon beam. For the dental impression material, we selected a silicone material with the lowest Hounsfield unit (HU) value that had little effect on the generation of artifacts and the quality of the X-ray beam. Multiphase magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that the head-up and -down motions in the thermoplastic shell without the mouthpiece were 5.76 ± 1.54 mm, whereas the motion with the mouthpiece decreased significantly to 1.72 ± 0.92 mm (P = 0.006). Similarly, the head-left and -right motion displacement decreased from 6.32 ± 1.86 mm without the mouthpiece to 1.80 ± 0.42 mm with the mouthpiece (P = 0.003). Regarding the tongue depressor function of the mouthpiece, the median distance from the hard palate to the surface of the tongue was 28.42 mm. The present results indicate that the new immobilization device developed herein that uses a mouthpiece and a thermoplastic shell is useful for suppressing patients’ head motions and tongue positions.

Aim:The aim of this in vitro study was to comparatively evaluate the effect of chemical disinfectants on the surface detail reproduction, dimensional stability and surface texture of polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) impressions.Materials and Methods:The impressions were then divided into five groups (fifteen samples per group) and subjected to a ten minutes immersion with 2% glutaraldehyde (Group I), 1% sodium hypochlorite (Group II), freshly prepared electrolyzed oxidizing water (EOW) with different pH values - acidic (Group III), alkali (Group IV) and neutral (Group V). The samples were examined pre and post-immersion under visual observation for surface detail reproduction, travelling microscope for measurement of dimensional stability and surface profilometer (3D) for evaluation of surface texture. A standardized master die was fabricated and seventy-five PVS test samples were made. The samples were subjected to immersion disinfection and studied for surface detail reproduction, dimensional stability and surface texture. Post-hoc test, paired t test and ANOVA were used to analyze dimensional stability statistically both within and between the test groups.Results:The surface detail reproduction was satisfactory with both pre and post-immersion test samples. A statistically significant dimensional change was observed post-immersion in Groups II, III and V test samples and a statistically insignificant dimensional change was observed in Groups I and IV test samples. There was a negligible change in surface texture post-immersion in Groups I, III, IV and V test samples with a slight increase in surface roughness post-immersion in Group II samples.Conclusion:In this study, all the test disinfectants produced satisfactory surface detail reproduction on Polyvinyl siloxane impressions. 2% glutaraldehyde and electrolyzed oxidizing water (alkali) have resulted in statistically insignificant dimensional change, while 1% sodium hypochlorite, electrolyzed oxidizing water (acidic) and electrolyzed oxidizing water (neutral) have resulted in statistically significant dimensional changes. All the test disinfectants except 1% sodium hypochlorite showed a reduction in surface roughness (Ra) values.
