A comparative study on the deposition of Mn12single molecule magnets on the Au(111) surface

Abstract: Different approaches to the deposition of Mn 12 single molecule magnets on the Au(111) surface and their characterization by a broad variety of techniques are investigated with respect to their suitability for a profound corroboration of the integrity of the Mn 12 core. In this context, the most recent improvements in the experimental approaches are presented and the latest results on the electronic properties of Mn 12 are linked to each other. The results confirm the high instability of Mn 12 single molecule … Show more

“…[8,9] The basic structure of [Mn 12 O 12 A C H T U N G T R E N N U N G (O 2 CR) 16 4 ] complexes is sketched in Figure 1. Three main strategies of deposition have been devised to graft Mn 12 -type complexes on gold substrates: [10] direct deposition of suitably-functionalised molecules on native metal surfaces, [11][12][13] deposition of native clusters on pre-functionalised metals, [13][14][15] and pre-functionalization of both partners with Abstract: The deposition of Mn 12 single molecule magnets on gold surfaces was studied for the first time using combined X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) methods at low temperature. The ability of the proposed approach to probe the electronic structure and magnetism of Mn 12 complexes without significant sample damage was successfully checked on bulk samples.…”

“…As shown in Fig. 6.6, one approach is to pre-functionalize the Au surface using the ligands with both thiol and carboxylic groups which allows the substitution with the peripheral moieties of Mn 12 on the surface, while the other one is to tailor the Mn 12 peripheral groups to thiol or thioether groups which will [8,23]. Therefore, the subsequent STM investigations demonstrate the formation of a submonolayer of SMMs, indicating the validity of the above approaches.…”
