A Comparative Study on the Spatial Characteristics of Traditional Residential Houses in Zhangguying and Laodong Villages Based on Space Syntax

Abstract: This article is based on space syntax theoy combined with field surveys and mapping data, Using AutoCad and Depthmap to analyze and interpret the spatial characteristics of traditonal houses in Zhangguying Village and Laodong Village in Xiangxi Prefecture. clarifying the difference in spatial characteristics between the two spaces and the influencing factors behind the difference by comparing the integration degree of visible layer and the degree of integration of the feasible layer.

“…The related research of landscape ecology mainly focuses on ecological sustainability-related issues (Chen & Liu, 2014;Norton et al, 2016;Potschin & Haines-Young, 2013), landscape ecology that emphasizes the interaction between spatial patterns and environmental processes, and the causes and consequences of spatial heterogeneity at different scales ( Turner & Gardner, 2015, p. 2). In addition, some scholars use space syntax to objectively describe the spatial structure and characteristics from the three aspects of Connection, Depth, and Integration and explore the relationship between spatial morphology and human behavior and activities (Liu, 2018;Yang et al, 2019;Zou & Liu, 2021). Although the above three technologies are all quantitative analysis and are different from GIS and RS technology, spatial grammar is also the theory of quantitative analysis of spatial form; it can measure space with mathematical models and abstract the relationship between areas into a connection diagram.…”

“…Some scholars also specifically explored the influence of the hierarchical system in traditional culture on spatial relations. Zou et al conducted a syntactic analysis of Zhang Guiying Village dwellings, and found that the symmetrical arrangement of dwellings along the central axis was a reflection of the hierarchical order of feudal patriarchy [25]. Seo et al analyzed the traditional Korean dwellings under Confucian ideology in different social eras, and stated that dwellings, as a medium for materializing social hierarchy, were influenced by the class system [26].…”

“…In particular, specific public areas that are defined as core spaces differ in accordance with the surrounding environment [22]. According to an analysis and interpretation of spatial features of traditional buildings in Zhangguying village and Laodong village in western Hunan province, China, the spatial structure of traditional buildings in Zhangguying village reflects the hierarchical order of feudal patriarchy, while traditional buildings in Laodong village do not have an obvious hierarchical order [23].…”
