A Comparative Study to Evaluate the Effect of Honey and Zinc Oxide Eugenol Dressing for the Treatment of Dry Socket: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Dry socket is a common postoperative complication secondary to any tooth extraction but is more commonly associated with mandibular third molars. Dry socket has been treated with various treatment modalities with different success rates. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of using honey and zinc oxide eugenol as an intra-socket medicament for the treatment of dry sockets. Ninety patients were divided into three groups as follows: Group 1 “honey”: 30 patients; Group 2 “zinc oxide eugenol”: 30 patients; and… Show more

“…The study is also comparable with Hussain et al, which also reported a high ratio of females as compared to females. 12 The present study also reported the habit of smoking in alveolar osteitis patients. Smoker male patients were reported 19 (68%) and nonsmokers 9 (32%), while female smokers were 6 (11%) and female nonsmokers were 46 (89%) as mentioned in Table-I, it was observed that smoker male ratio was high as compared to female.…”

“…This correlation may be attributed to the historical era before 1960 when oral contraceptives were less commonly used 9 . Previous studies [9][10][11] highlighted the impact of oral contraceptive pills on increasing fi brinolytic activity in the blood and saliva of women during the menstrual phase 10 . Study by Devesh et al revealed a significantly elevated incidence of alveolar osteitis (AO) among contraceptive users, suggesting a potential association between oral contraceptive use and an increased vulnerability to dry socket 9 .…”

“…Irrigation enhances healing by removing debris, sequestra, and bacteria from the socket. Most commonly, normal saline and chlorhexidine gluconate are used [ 5 ]. The concept of AO management is changing toward alternative treatment techniques, including plasma-rich growth factors, low-level laser therapy, and other interventions such as the use of honey.…”
