A comparison of a hybrid stubble turnip (cv. Appin) with other cruciferous catch crops for lamb fattening. 2. Animal performance and toxicological evaluation

Abstract: Forage brassica catch crops can provide a valuable source of additional feed in the autumn when supplies of other feed are limited. Weaned lambs grazed either (A) a novel hybrid crop, stubble turnip cv. Appin, or (B) a sequence of crops consisting of fodder radish cv. Nerys, followed by forage rape cv. Canard. Forty, 60 or 80 g of crop DM per kg current live weight (LW) were allowed daily and the performance, intake and carcass yield of the lambs were monitored. Lamb LW gains were lower on treatment A (45, 65 … Show more

“…No detrimental effects were observed however when turnips were offered either for 7 weeks prior to mating (Valderrabano et al, 1981), or for the last 8 weeks of pregnancy, to prolific ewes (Valderrabano and Faci, 1983). Young, Austin, Orr, Newton and Taylor (1982) reported some alterations in blood characteristics and thyroid size in lambs grazing stubble turnips but they appeared not to affect performance.…”

“…(McNaughton et al, 1975): it had resistance to premature leaf senescence and improved root anchorage to facilitate grazing. However, in comparison to rape, Appin gave poor animal performance (Young et al, 1982). Likewise, 'Tyfon' and 'Perko' were produced by continental breeders at the tetraploid level.…”

“…Most commonly, PCV and Hb decrease mildly (Grant et al 1968a;Backgren and Jonsson 1969;Tucker 1969;Young et al 1982). The reader is encouraged to use a taxonomic key covering the plants in his or her geographical area.…”

“…The hemolysis is generally of older RBCs, accompanied by a decreasing myeloid/erythroid ratio in the bone marrow as destruction becomes balanced by erythropoiesis (Tucker 1969;Young et al 1982). Recovery occurs within a few weeks of the animal 's ceasing to eat Brassica; there may be partial recovery even with continued ingestion.…”
