“…It is reported to occur in between 7 and 30% of neurodevelopmentally delayed individuals, especially those with autism [Green, 1967;MacKay et al,1974;Sandman and Barron, 1992;Schroeder et al, 1978]. The most influential explanations of SIB have been behavioral (e.g., attention seeking; escape/avoidance), and many interventions were effective without consideration of possible biological mechanisms [Iwata et al, 1982;Matson and Taras, 1989;Matson and Keyes, 1990;Rincover and Devaney, 1982;Rincover and Koegel, 1975;Romanczyk and Goren, 1975]. Understanding putative biological mechanisms provides a basis for rational pharmacological treatment strategies.…”

“…An impressive body of research accumulated over 30 years has found TO effective with a variety of behaviors and with various child and adolescent populations. For example, TO has been used successfully with children with developmental delays (Mace & Heller, 1990; Matson & Keyes, 1990; Olmi, Sevier, & Nastasi, 1997), adolescent psychiatric patients (Crespi, 1988), oppositional and aggressive children (Jones, Sloane, & Roberts, 1992; Roberts, 1988; Roberts & Powers, 1990), and nonclinical populations (Gardner, Forehand, & Roberts, 1976).…”

“…Recent examples include a review of the treatment of sexual deviancy in which Foxx et al (1986) discuss one study in which Differential Reinforcement of Other Behaviour Schedule (DRO) alone was effective as a treatment of exposure, but two others in which DRO was effective for the treatment of masturbation only when combined with over-correction. Matson and Keyes (1990) found that neither DRO alone nor combined with verbal reprimand was effective in reducing selfinjury and aggressive behaviours, but that these were reduced by the addition of brief (1 minute) movement suppression time out, in one case this effect being maintained over eight months. McGreevy and Arthur (1987) used a combined Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behaviour Schedule (DRI)/punishment programme to decrease self-biting in a two year old with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.…”
