A Comparison of Gill Netting and Electrofishing as Sampling Techniques for White Bass in Missouri's Large Reservoirs

Abstract: I compared fall gill netting with spring electrofishing to determine which method best represented the population abundance and size structure of white bass Morone chrysops in two Missouri reservoirs. Gill nets caught all ages and sizes of white bass, and both sexes were equally represented. Median catch rates were variable but were usually less than 10 fish/gill-net day. Mean annual electrofishing catch rates peaked after mid-April and ranged from about 50-180 fish/h. Electrofishing did not reflect the size s… Show more

“…Gill nets are widely used to assess the fishery resources in many aquatic ecosystems such as lakes, impoundments, bay and sea (Minns & Hurley 1988;Murphy & Willis 1996;Colvin 2002). Gill nets have a detrimental impact on capturing some of the species; however, for the assessment of fisheries diversity, it is a more cost-effective technique compared to other expensive and labour-intensive procedures (David & William 2005).…”

“…Fisheries managers and researchers require unbiased estimates of fish population characteristics. Sampling techniques should provide a measure of relative abundance, and the fish captured should accurately reflect the size structure of the fish population (Guy et al., 1996; Colvin, 2002; Paukert, 2004). Sampling must also be standardized to obtain precise, unbiased estimates of fish population size and age structure and relative abundance (Allen et al., 1999).…”

“…Palmetto bass were sampled in mid-October, 2006À2011, with experimental monofilament gill nets set on the bottom in water depths of 3À8 m on flats and points (Colvin 2002). Gill nets were set either parallel or perpendicular to shore depending on topography (i.e., steep slopes were avoided).…”
