A Comparison of Paper‐and‐Pencil and Computer Versions of the Self‐Directed Search

“…The most significant weakness inherent in the SDS-CV is the lack of data supporting the technical adequacy of the instrument. Aside from the Reardon and Loughead (1988) study, no research currently exists to support the instrument's reliability or validity. Whereas the Reardon and Loughead study does provide some initial evidence of SDS and SDS-CV comparability, additional research is needed.…”

“…Although a number of these have found the two modes equivalent (Follette, 1984;Holden & Hickman, 1987;Reardon & Loughead, 1988), some studies have suggested that computerization may be associated with differential responding (Allred & Harris, 1985, as cited in Hofer & Green, 1985Koson, Kitchen, Kochen, & Stodolosky, 1970;Lautenschlager & Flahert~, 1990). Moreover, note that the majority of these studies have considered the issue in relation to adult populations.…”

“…Of additional interest in the current review is the computer version of the SDS. The computerized version appears to be comparable to the paper-and-pencil version and may have utility for use in career exploration with individuals with various physical disabilities (Reardon & Loughead, 1988).…”
