We study seismic noise recorded in the northeast of the Netherlands by beamforming and by using empirical Green's functions obtained by seismic interferometry. From beamforming we found differences in noise directions in different frequency bands. The main source region for primary microseisms (0.05-0.08 Hz) is in the west-northwest direction, while the secondary microseisms (0.1-0.14 Hz) have a west-southwest back azimuth. Furthermore, we observed a fast (∼4 km=s) arrival corresponding to the Rayleigh wave overtone. This arrival is also in the secondary microseism band (between 0.15 and 0.2 Hz), but has a west-northwest back azimuth. Both arrivals in the secondary microseism band gain in strength during winter, as does the average wave height in the North Atlantic. We measured phase velocity dispersion curves from both beamforming and noise cross-correlations, as well as group velocity from the latter. These are then jointly inverted for an average 1D S-wave model. The results show how the combination of different methods leads to a more complete characterization of the propagation modes and an improved knowledge of the subsurface, especially as the group velocity measurements increase the upper frequency limit of analysis, providing valuable information of the shallowest subsurface.

International audienceRecent research has shown that noise can be turned from a nuisance into a useful seismic source. In seismology and other fields in science and engineering, the estimation of the system response from noise measurements has proven to be a powerful technique. To convey the essence of the method, we first treat the simplest case of a homogeneous medium to show how noise measurements can be used to estimate waves that propagate between sensors. We provide an overview of physics research--dating back more than 100 years--showing that random field fluctuations contain information about the system response. This principle has found extensive use in surface-wave seismology but can also be applied to the estimation of body waves. Because noise provides continuous illumination of the subsurface, the extracted response is ideally suited for time-lapse monitoring. We present examples of time-lapse monitoring as applied to the softening of soil after the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake, the detection of a precursor to a landslide, and temporal changes in the lunar soil

SUMMARYWith seismic interferometry or the virtual source method, controlled sources can be redatumed from the Earth's surface to generate so-called virtual sources at downhole receiver locations. Generally this is done by crosscorrelation of the recorded downhole data and stacking over source locations. By studying the retrieved data at zero time lag, downhole illumination conditions that determine the virtual source radiation pattern can be analyzed without a velocity model. This can be beneficial for survey planning in time-lapse experiments. Moreover, the virtual source radiation pattern can be corrected by multidimensional deconvolution or directional balancing. Such an approach can help to improve virtual source repeatability, posing major advantages for reservoir monitoring. An algorithm is proposed for so-called illumination balancing (being closely related to directional balancing). It can be applied to single-component receiver arrays with limited aperture below a strongly heterogeneous overburden. The algorithm is demonstrated on synthetic 3D elastic data to retrieve time-lapse amplitude attributes.
