“…Onthophagus babirussa commonly occurs in forest and widely distributes in Sundaland (Borneo, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java, and Palawan) (Balthasar 1963;Goh and Hashim 2018). When compared to our study, Goh and Hashim (2018) reported similar results regarding dominant species, with O. babirussa being highly caught by both pitfall traps and burrowing interception traps in the Ulu Gombak Forest Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia. In contrast, low abundance of O. babirussa was collected in Gunung Palung National Park, Kalimantan (Malina et al 2018).…”

“…The dung bait was suspended over the cup, protected with a rain cover, and left for 48 h before collection. Bag traps (Arellano , Goh and Hashim ), designed to capture dung beetles exploiting the dung to form brood balls or balls buried for feeding, were made from large agricultural plastic bags with drainage holes in the bottom, buried in the ground, and back‐filled with approximately 70 L of soil (0.45 × 0.45 m). Bags were buried flush with the soil surface; mammal dung was placed on top of the soil inside the bag and left for 24 h. Upon collection, the bags were sealed, and dung beetles collected by sifting through the soil onto a white sheet.…”

“…The difference in the total abundance and biomass of dung beetles collected between the two trap types suggests that pitfall traps may give an overestimate if used to approximate the extent of ecosystem functions provided by dung beetles. However, burial intercept traps do not reliably capture rolling dung beetles (Arellano, ; Goh & Hashim, ), so alternative methods are needed to estimate how dung removal varies among dung beetle guilds in systems where rolling beetles make up a larger proportion of the dung beetle community.…”
