A Comprehensive Survey on Microgrippers Design: Operational Strategy

Abstract: This article provides an overview of the operational strategies adopted in microgrippers design. The review covers microgrippers recently proposed in Literature, some of which have been systematically presented in a companion paper, where their topological, kinematic, and structural characteristics are discussed. In the present contribution, the prevalent actuation methods and the operational aspects are discussed: the tip displacement, the tip force, the actuation voltage, and the amplification factor are the… Show more

“…For example, MEMS can improve surgical outcomes, with lower risk, by providing the surgeon with real-time feedback on the operation. From the mechanical and operational point of view, microgrippers for different applications have been extensively proposed in literature [2,3].…”

“…Hundreds of different micro-systems have indeed been reported in the literature [1,2], with different operational strategies [3] and being mainly dedicated to medical or biological applications. Among others, an untethered mobile microgripper controlled by an external electromagnetic coil system has been reported [4], where the manipulation of different microgels was successfully demonstrated with a pick-and-place robotic heterogeneous 3D assembly technique.…”

“…Microgrippers are one such type of MEMS devices that are typically designed to safely manipulate biological cells [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] as well as micromechanical parts [10][11][12]. The successful development of a MEMS microgripper depends on taking into account several factors including the design and mechanical structure [13], the actuation mechanism [14,15], the choice of materials used [16][17][18][19], the operational requirements and limitations [20], the fabrication technology [21][22][23][24][25][26], and the environment in which the microgripper will be operated [27].…”
