A Conceptual Framework of Nursing in Native American Culture

Abstract: The conceptual framework of nursing in the Native American culture, with its seven dimensions, shares dimensions with mainstream nursing, yet it differs in many important ways. This model can be used by Native American nurses to provide a structure for engaging in the profession of nursing. Further, it can be used by nurses of other cultures to understand nursing in the Native American culture and to provide health care to Native American people.

“…The dimensions and characteristics of this combined instructional strategy assist the learner in his/her development as a whole person, someone who is aware of his/her own weaknesses and strengths, and conscious as well of the weaknesses and strengths of others. Such an instructional strategy is holistic in that it demonstrates the qualities that Lowe and Struthers (2001) identify as the main aspects of holism: balance, culture and relationship. But it is also inclusive in two important ways.…”

“…When treating Native Americans, there can be cultural aspects that can pose difficulties or alter typical treatments. Lowe and Struthers (2001) suggest a conceptual framework that encompasses care, tradition, respect, connection, holism, trust, and spirituality, all of which are essential for the nursing care of Native Americans. These individuals are acutely aware of their surroundings and trust is difficult for them, especially of people who are not of Native American descent (Null, 1996).…”

“…Several Indigenous health frameworks stress the importance of relational aspects in healing, including respect, connection, trust, and spirituality (Cross, 2003;Hovey, Delormier, & McComber, 2014;Lowe & Struthers, 2001). First, Indigenous traditional healing practices often emphasize collective, holistic approaches for healing mind, body, and spiritual pain, which may differ from Western medicine that often focuses on the individual and physical aspects alone (Struthers, Eschiti, & Patchell, 2004).…”
