Antecedents and consequences of effectuation and causation in the international new venture creation process

The selection of the entry mode in an international market is of key importance for the venture. A process-based perspective on entry mode selection can add to the International Business and International Entrepreneurship literature. Framing the international market entry as an entrepreneurial process, this paper analyzes the antecedents and consequences of causation and effectuation in the entry mode selection. For the analysis, regression-based techniques were used on a sample of 65 gazelles. The results indicate that experienced entrepreneurs tend to apply effectuation rather than causation, while uncertainty does not have a systematic influence. Entrepreneurs using causation-based international new venture creation processes tend to engage in export-type entry modes, while effectuation-based international new venture creation processes do not predetermine the entry mode.

RESUMOO processo da estratégia empresarial apresenta três dimensões: o pensamento lógico ou criativo, a formação deliberada ou emergente e a mudança revolucionária ou evolucionária. Ademais, o estilo cognitivo do estrategista também ganhou ênfase no campo da estratégia, sendo caracterizado pelo padrão individual de processamento de informações. Alinhando a cognição às dimensões do processo estratégico, adotou-se como recorte as micro e pequenas empresas, consideradas como organizações empreendedoras. O objetivo geral do artigo foi analisar a relação entre o estilo cognitivo divergente holístico do empreendedor e as três dimensões do processo de estratégia em micro e pequenas e empresas. Adotou-se uma abordagem quantitativa, com coleta de dados a partir de questionário aplicado a uma amostra de 92 micro e pequenas empresas de um município do estado de São Paulo. Os resultados, a partir da análise da modelagem de equações estruturais, demonstraram a relação entre o estilo divergente holístico com o pensamento estratégico do tipo criativo, com a formação estratégica deliberada e com a mudança estratégica de caráter tanto revolucionário quanto evolucionário. Como contribuições, delineou-se que, diante de um estilo divergente holístico, o empreendedor assume um pensamento estratégico criativo e preconiza tanto mudanças revolucionárias quanto evolucionárias. Por outro lado, a criatividade, a inovação e a visão holista do estilo em questão não corroboram necessariamente para uma formação estratégica emergente, flexível e colaborativa, pelo contrário, se associam a uma formação deliberada sob responsabilidade exclusiva do empreendedor proprietário.Palavras-chave: Processo de Estratégia; Estilo Cognitivo Divergente Holístico; Micro e Pequenas Empresas.

Our study develops and tests a research model that investigates the impact of born-globals' customer orientation on innovativeness through the mediating roles of technological capability, relationship quality, and relationship information process. Data obtained from 197 small and medium-sized born-global firms in Turkey were used to gauge these relationships through structural equation modelling. The results suggest that born-globals' customer orientation influences innovativeness indirectly through the mediating role of technological capability. Simply put, technological capability acts as a full mediator between customer orientation and innovativeness. Contrary to our predictions, relationship quality and relationship information process do not significantly influence innovativeness. Therefore, the empirical data do not support the mediating roles of relationship quality and relationship information process. In short, our study contributes to current knowledge by examining the factors that influence the innovativeness of born-globals using data obtained from born-globals in Turkey, which is a newly industrialised country.
