A Construct Validation Study of the Human Figure Drawing Test

Abstract: To assess whether the Human Figure Drawing Test provides an assessment of nonverbal cognitive maturity, correlations for 31 youngsters who ranged in age from 6-0 to 10-10 on the Human Figure Drawing Test and the Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children--Revised (WISC--R) were examined. Significant correlations were observed for each of the scales, but the value of .69 for drawings and WISC--R Performance IQs was significant, suggesting the assessment that these te… Show more

“…This action has resulted in misdiagnoses by school psychologists. High correlations between the drawing of a human figure and cognitive measures have been reported (Fabry & Bertinetti, 1990;Plubrukarn & Theeramanoparp, 2003), which suggests that the tests should be used only as a complementary tool for nonverbal cognitive assessment.…”

“…She developed a scoring system for the HFD as a test of mental maturity. Reliability studies (Koppitz, 1968;Snyder & Gaston, 1970;Fabry & Bertinetti, 1990;van de Vijfeijken, 1994;Abell et al, 1996) indicate that the inter-rater reliability commonly exceeds 0.90. Several studies showed low to high correlations between children's HFD score and their intelligence score.…”
