A Content Analysis of Errors in MLIS Students’ Online Searching Assignments

Abstract: Very few formal studies have documented the errors committed in online searching performances, and none have focused exclusively on students in library and information science programs. To fill this gap, the authors conducted a content analysis of online searching errors of MLIS students based upon a coding scheme derived from previous error typologies and enhanced with new categories related to strategic searching decisions. The results suggest that errors committed by MLIS students align with errors identifi… Show more

“…Strong academic writing skills are essential for success in postgraduate education and for active participation in the scientific community (Ibrahim et al, 2017). Academic writing has been defined as a cognitive skill that engages students in a complex process involving the synthesis of gained knowledge (Defazio et al, 2010) to critically and clearly articulate reasoning into new ideas (Ondrusek, 2012). In academic writing, students are required to connect ideas, concepts, and theories using advanced skills and applying "depth and breadth" learning (Lavelle & Bushrow, 2007).…”

“…In addition to the practical effects of these missing interface elements that support learning to search, these gaps reinforce corresponding gaps in user mental models (Han et al, 2020) that have been documented and which have a profound impact on user ability to scale the learning curves connecting novice search skills to higher proficiency in search for more complex information needs. The types of errors made by novice searchers (Ondrusek et al, 2019) can be overcome by in-context assistance from the search engine, whether in the form of context-sensitive help or learning modes (see Figure 2), and discussed in the literature (Eickhoff et al, 2015; Fessl et al, 2018; Moraveji et al, 2011). During the activities of searching, a user is intensely receptive to learning new ways, both to better understand the processes of search as they are occurring and to refine and iterate to improve the search outcome (Ghosh et al, 2018; Ghosh and Shah, 2017; Theng et al, 2016).…”
