A controlled study of oral self-care and self-perceived oral health in type 2 diabetic patients

Abstract: A controlled study was carried out in mid-Sweden with the aim of comparing oral self-care and self-perceived oral health in 102 randomly sampled type 2 diabetic patients with that of 102 age-and-gender-matched non-diabetic controls. Oral health variables were also related to glycemic control (HbA1c), duration, anti-diabetic treatment, and late complications. Questionnaires were used to collect data on oral self-care and self-perceived oral health. Diabetes-related variables were extracted from medical records.… Show more

“…Information on diabetes type and most recent glycosylated hemoglobin level (HbA1c) were obtained from patient medical records. Diabetes control was considered to be good if HbA1c was ≤ 6.0%, moderate if it was 6.1-7.5%, and poor if it was > 7.5% (24). Informed, written consent was received from all patients who agreed to participate in the study.…”

“…A total of 158 patients (75.2%) were interviewed about diabetes self-care and health. They were all offered a clinical oral examination free of charge at two Public Dental Service (PDS) clinics (reported elsewhere) (7) and were requested to complete a questionnaire on oral selfcare (reported elsewhere) (24) and the SF-36 HRQL questionnaire for the purpose of the present study. Onehundred-and-two of the 158 patients (64.6%) agreed to participate in the oral health examination.…”

“…The agreement between the eligibility of studies was considered excellent (k= 0.91) [11]. Among the selected studies, published between 1989 and 2014, 8 were conducted in Europe [14,15,18,19,25,28,29,32], 5 were conducted in Asia [13,16,23,24,30] and 100 were conducted in America [17, 20-22, 26, 27, 31, 33-35]. Overall, the occurrence of dry mouth was investigated in 1979 in people with diabetes (cases) and 1667 controls, whereas in 15 articles, the authors subdivided the outcome into types 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (Table 1).…”
