A cross-sectional analysis of ITN and IRS coverage in Namibia in 2013

Abstract: BackgroundAchieving vector control targets is a key step towards malaria elimination. Because of variations in reporting of progress towards vector control targets in 2013, the coverage of these vector control interventions in Namibia was assessed.MethodsData on 9846 households, representing 41,314 people, collected in the 2013 nationally-representative Namibia Demographic and Health Survey were used to explore the coverage of two vector control methods: indoor residual spraying (IRS) and insecticide-treated n… Show more

“…This discovery is in line with the findings of a research conducted in Kenya's Kilifi District (Rakiya et al, 2012). Most pregnant women were comfortable in sleeping under ITNs, during rainy season, knowledge on the benefits of ITNs, warmth it generates during cold weather and being non allergic to the chemical were the motivating factors similar to the findings of (Kimbi, Nkesa, Ndamukong-nyanga et al, 2014; Allcock et al, 2018;Tijani, 2017). The implication is that, Kintampo and for that matter Ghana as a country is doing very well in the promotion of ITNs use among antenatal women seeking ANC services in the Kintampo municipality.…”

“…One of the most effective methods of the malaria vector control in Cameroon is the use of mosquito bed nets and depending on whether it is a long-lasting insecticidal one, further increases the vector control chances. Several studies have highlighted the importance of increased mosquito net usage and LLITN and their role in reducing the incidence of malaria in SSA (38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44). In this study, most urban-city centers and rural clusters household settlements in the North region had at least one mosquito net whether or not it was a treated (> 50% ), while the West and East regions recorded a low coverage for the above ITNs coverage category.…”

“…There is, therefore, an urgent need for an alternative class of insecticide that can be used with nets to reduce selection pressure on pyrethroids. In addition to ITNs, indoor residual spraying (IRS) is also used in vector control programs in Africa but its coverage is below 50% [ 8 , 45 ]. Vector control programs should increase the coverage of IRS with insecticides that do not belong to pyrethroids or organochlorine like DDT.…”
