A crystal structure refinement from Laue photographs taken with synchrotron radiation

Abstract: AbstraetThe crystal structure of a-A1PO4 (berlinite; P3121) has been refined from Laue photographs taken with synchrotron radiation at the SRS Daresbury Laboratory. The refinement led to an R factor of 0.19 for the integrated intensities (measured by microdensitometer) of 175 non-symmetry-equivalent Laue spots. The refinement program includes explicitly the overlapping diffraction orders and uses an experimentally determined instrument function to describe the incidentbeam intensity and the film response as fu… Show more

“…We were not the only ones encountering this problem. Laue diffraction patterns from single crystals of an aluminium phosphate had also been obtained with short exposures at the new Synchrotron Radiation Source at Daresbury Laboratory by Wood et al [13], and its structure successfully refined. Also at Daresbury, the protein crystallographer John Helliwell and his colleagues were commissioning beamline SRS9.6 for protein crystallography, similar to our beamlines at CHESS.…”

“…All synchrotron sources are n atu rally polychrom atic and therefore ap p ro p riate to the Laue technique (Amoros et a l . 1975;Wood et al 1983;Moffat et al 1 1985;H ajdu et al 1987). The exposure tim e in a Laue experim ent is inversely proportional to the spectral intensity falling on the crystal, in units such as photons (s m m 2 0.1 % bandpass)"1.…”
