A cytogenetic study of human spontaneous abortions using banding techniques

Abstract: The karyotypes of 941 singleton and 42 twin abortuses and 4 cystic placentae were determined. 30.5% of the singletons were chromosomally abnormal; 49.8% of these were trisomic, 23.7% X-monosomics and 17.4% polyploid. 143 trisomies were identified by banding; over a third had an extra chromosome 16, more than 10% an extra 21 or 22 and about 5% an extra 2, 18 or 15. Examples of trisomy 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14 and 20 were also encountered. Using the data from two other published studies, the prevalence of differen… Show more

“…The highest sex ratios were obtained by studies from this laboratory (Dhadial, Machin and Tait, 1970;Creasy, Crolla and Alberman, 1976) which included abortuses expelled at the end of the second trimester. In the larger of these studies the sex-ratio was 126.3, but when abortions after the nineteenth week were excluded this fell to 114.8.…”

“…A complete trisomy for the chromosome 14 has been detected in spontaneous abortuses (K@i et aI., 1972;Creasy et al, 1976), but never in newborns. However, trisomy 14 in a mosaic form with normal diploid cells and partial trisomy 14 have occasionally been reported in liveborn individuals (cf., Miller et al, 1979;Johnson et aL, 1979).…”
