A Database Perspective on Consuming Linked Data on the Web

Abstract: During recent years an increasing number of data providers adopted the Linked Data principles for publishing and connecting structured data on the Web, thus creating a globally distributed dataspacethe Web of Data. While the execution of structured, SQL-like queries over this dataspace opens possibilities not conceivable before, query execution on the Web of Data poses novel challenges. These challenges provide great opportunities for the database community. In this article we introduce the concept of Linked Da… Show more

“…Federated SPARQL query processing is receiving more attention lately and a number of specific approaches have already been published, e. g. [30,23,11,25,12,15,13,29,9]. Stuckenschmidt et al [30] employ indices for matching path patterns in queries while Harth et al [11] use a (compressed) index of subjects, predicates, and objects in order to match queries to sources.…”

“…In addition to the automatically generated mappings, we use the existing mappings used in [4] and those already available on the web. 13,14 Our system is designed with pluggable architecture and hence can use output from any Alignment System that provides mappings in the Alignment API's Alignment format [6].…”

“…However, there is existing work on query federation which assumes that the user intimately knows concepts and datasets beforehand [27,13,18,29]. [14] discusses a database perspective for querying Linked Data on the web including query federation, while [29] investigates optimizing techniques for federated query processing on Linked Data. ALOQUS also uses federation techniques to query distributed datasets once the sub-queries are generated.…”
