A Decade of Transit Oriented Development Policies in Brisbane, Australia: Development and Land-Use Impacts

Abstract: Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) involves intense, mixed development around transit nodes. This article investigates the extent to which TOD policies have become reality in Brisbane, a city of two million in eastern Australia, which has embraced TOD at a policy level. It also aims to present a straightforward method which cities in Australia and internationally can employ to measure the outcomes of their TOD policies. Through GIS analysis, the authors measure the level of concentration of population, dwellin… Show more

“…a theoretical framework meaning to solve urban and neighborhood problems and bring about social change through physical design) is according to Sharifi (2016) a way to achieve smart growth. This paper recognises the importance of TOD as a dynamically evolving and when used wisely powerful tool for city-planners but much in line with Yang and Pojani (2017) acknowledges that TOD is not a panacea. However, it has a synergistic value greater than the sum of its parts as also noted by Duncan (2011) and thus can contribute positively in the creation of more livable urban futures.…”

“…Two of the mentioned regional physical design features (i.e., land-use and building density) are always discussed in the pieces of literature reviewing TOD cases [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. The three mentioned regional physical design features (i.e., land-use, building density, and street network) are highlighted as three TOD principles (i.e., mix, and connect) by ITDP [8].…”

“…It on the other hand has led to a number of transport-relative challenges, including proliferation of travel demand, rising private vehicle possession, serious traffic congestion, limited public transport services in terms of quality and quantity, not to mention pollution and road accident [3]. Construction of rail-based systems is the key to meeting effectively increasing travel demand and thus relieving other issues [4]. However, the costly construction of metro is a big impediment to the budget-constraint countries.…”
