“…Regardless of the variations seen in life cycles, however, the oral complex of peritrichs appears to replicate precisely to form two identical daughter complexes in every species that has been investigated (Lom,1964; Fernández‐Galiano et al,1988; Guinea et al,1988; Esteban and Fernández‐Galiano,1989). The oral complex of peritrichs is an intricate, specialized set of structures that seems to consist of the same, basic components across the entire subclass (Lom,1964; Bradbury,1965; Rosenberg and Grim,1966; Lom and Corliss,1968; Zagon,1970; Zagon and Small,1970; Guinea et al,1990; Clamp and Coats,2000; Hu and Song,2001; Ji and Song,2004; Ji et al,2004; Sun et al,2005; Ji et al,2006; Sun et al,2006; Peng et al,2007; Ji and Kusuoka,2009; Ji et al,2009; Qi et al,2009), which leads one to believe that all peritrichs should have a similar pattern of stomatogenesis (Foissner,1996). If this is true, previous investigations of stomatogenesis need to be compared with the present study because our results differed from theirs in some cases.…”
