Prevalence of benefit finding and posttraumatic growth in long-term cancer survivors: results from a multi-regional population-based survey in Germany

Background Cancer studies reported mixed results on benefit finding (BF) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) prevalence and few were focused on long-term survivors. Methods BF and PTG were assessed in a multi-regional population-based study in Germany with 6952 breast, colorectal and prostate cancer survivors, using the Benefit Finding Scale and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory. We calculated the age-adjusted prevalence, stratified by demographical and clinical characteristics. Results Overall, 66.0% of cancer survivors indicated moderate-to-high BF, and 20.5% moderate-to-high PTG. Age-adjusted prevalence of BF and PTG differed according to cancer type (breast > colorectal > prostate) and sex (female > male). BF and PTG prevalence were higher in younger than in older respondents; the age-adjusted prevalence was higher in respondents who survived more years after diagnosis. The strength and direction of associations of age-adjusted prevalence with cancer stage, disease recurrence, and time since diagnosis varied according to cancer type and sex. Conclusions A substantial proportion of long-term cancer survivors reported moderate-to-high BF and PTG. However, the prevalence was lower in older and male cancer survivors, and during the earlier years after cancer diagnosis. Further longitudinal studies on PTG and BF in cancer survivors are warranted to address heterogeneity in survivors’ experience after cancer diagnosis.

Background and Objectives: Chronic renal disease is a threatening condition for the health, economic, and social status of the affected person and his/her family. Patients undergoing hemodialysis encounter mental and health problems; the current study aimed at predicting resilience via social support and illness perceptions among patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods:The current descriptive-correlational study had a statistical population including 308 patients undergoing hemodialysis in Kerman, Iran, in 2017. Based on the Krejcie-Morgan table, the minimum required sample size was 169. The sample was selected using a convenience sampling method. Data collection tools were the Connor-Davidson resilience scale, the medical outcome study (MOS) social support survey developed by Sherbourne and Stewart, and the brief illness perception questionnaire developed by Broadbent et al. Data were analyzed using a Pearson correlation coefficient and a stepwise regression analysis via SPSS version 19. Results: Results indicated that resilience was significantly and positively related to social support (r = 0.318, P < 0.05) and illness perceptions (r = 0.165, P < 0.05). Among the subscales of social support, emotional support, tangible support, and social interaction could predict resilience, and among the subscales of illness perceptions, only cognitive representation could predict resilience. Conclusions:The obtained results demonstrated that resilience was significantly and positively related to social support and illness perceptions. Additionally, the subscales of social support and illness perceptions could predict resilience among the patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Amaç: Bu çalışma, kanser hastalarında umutsuzluğun ve manevi bakım algısının değerlendirilmesi amacıyla tanımlayıcı ve kesitsel olarak yapıldı. Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmanın evrenini, Haziran-Eylül 2019 tarihleri arasında bir üniversite hastanesinin onkoloji servisinde tedavi gören tüm kanser hastaları oluşturdu. Araştırmanın örneklemini ise, kanser hastalığı olup araştırmaya katılmayı engelleyebilecek fiziksel ve zihinsel bir problemi bulunmayan, araştırmaya katılmayı gönüllü olarak kabul eden, soruları yanıtlayabilecek bilişsel yeterliliği sahip, 18 yaş ve üzerinde olan 125 hasta oluşturdu. Veriler araştırmacılar tarafından yüz yüze görüşme tekniği ile "Kişisel Bilgi Formu", " BECK Umutsuzluk Ölçeği" ve "Maneviyat ve Manevi Bakım Dereceleme Ölçeği" kullanılarak toplandı Bulgular: Hastaların BECK Umutsuzluk Ölçeği puan ortalaması 11,63±5,34, maneviyat ve manevi bakım ölçeği puan ortalaması 66,54±4,90 olarak saptandı. Hastaların yaşı ile gelecek ile ilgili duygular puanı arasında anlamlı, pozitif bir ilişki olduğu görüldü (r=0,183 ve p=0,041). Bekar hastalarla farklı bir kronik hastalığı olanların BUÖ toplam puan ortalamasının, gelecek ile ilgili duygular puan ortalamasının ve gelecek ile ilgili beklentiler puan ortalamasının daha yüksek olduğu saptandı. Katılımcılardan bekar olan, ailesinde başka kanser hastası olan ve farklı bir kronik hastalığı olan hastaların maneviyat ve manevi bakım dereceleme ölçeğitoplam puan ortalaması daha yüksek bulundu (p<0,05). Ayrıca araştırmaya dahil edilen hastaların maneviyat ve manevi bakım algılarıyla umutsuzluk düzeyleri arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ve doğrusal bir ilişki olmadığı sonucuna varıldı (p>0,05). Sonuç: Kanser hastaların orta düzeyde umutsuzluğa sahip olduğu belirlendi. Hastaların maneviyat ve manevi bakım algıların yüksek düzeyde olduğu bulundu. Data were collected by researchers using the "Personal Information Form", "BECK Hopelessness Scale" and "Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale" by face to face interview technique.
