A distributed fiber vibration sensor utilizing dispersion induced walk-off effect in a unidirectional Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Abstract: Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel ultra-long range and sensitive distributed fiber vibration sensor. Only one unidirectional Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is employed in this scheme as the sensing element. In this sensor structure, we utilize chromatic dispersion-induced walk-off effect between the vibration signals sensed by two distributed feedback (DFB) lasers at different wavelengths to locate the vibration position. Vibration signals with frequencies up to 9MHz can be detected… Show more

“…For example, the authors in [8] describe dynamic strain measured by Mach-Zehnder interferometric optical fibre sensors and signal demodulation using a 3 × 3 coupler. A distributed fibre vibration sensor utilizing dispersion induced walk-off effect in a unidirectional Mach-Zehnder interferometer was presented by Chen et al [9]. The authors in [10] describe dual parameter fibre optic sensor combining a Fabry-Perot and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.…”

“…The complete citation is used on the first page, and an abbreviated version on subsequent pages. [4] and even Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) [5]. All the described methods exhibit very high detection sensitivity and are able to cover large areas, but, they usually are based on monomode optical fibers.…”

“…Many types of fiber-optic acoustic sensors, based on fiber Bragg gratings [1,2], intensity modulation [3], and interferometers, had been reported. Among them, the interferometric sensors, such as Fabry–Pérot interferometers [4,5,6], Mach–Zehnder interferometers [7,8,9], and Sagnac interferometers [10], have achieved high sensitivity and low minimum detectable pressure.…”
