A Distributed Position-Based Protocol for Emergency Messages Broadcasting in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

Abstract: Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) can help reduce traffic accidents through broadcasting emergency messages among vehicles in advance. However, it is a great challenge to timely deliver the emergency messages to the right vehicles which are interested in them. Some protocols require to collect nearby real-time information before broadcasting a message, which may result in an increased delivery latency. In this paper, we proposed an improved position-based protocol to disseminate emergency messages among a lar… Show more

“…The fast and successful propagation of emergency messages among the vehicles is very crucial as the lives of nearby citizens are dependent on it. Broadcasting the emergency messages to surrounding vehicles in advance can help reduce the number of traffic accidents [6], [7]. It is very important to design transmission methods for emergency messages especially in the case of large scale VANETs [8].…”

“…If a traffic accident happens on a road, then the emergency message should be broadcasted to all vehicles in Region of Interest (ROI) [12] which is the area exposed to potential hazards. In VSNs, emergence messages have to be disseminated without any time delay to avoid potential accidents [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. If some neighbor vehicles don't receive the emergency message because of message collision or transmission error [21], they may be exposed to secondary accidents.…”
