A double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study of a commercial Aloe vera gel in the treatment of slight to moderate psoriasis vulgaris

Abstract: The effect of this commercial Aloe vera gel on stable plaque psoriasis was modest and not better than placebo. However, the high response rate of placebo indicated a possible effect of this in its own right, which would make the Aloe vera gel treatment appear less effective.

“…There are two randomized placebo-controlled trials of aloe vera gel for the treatment of mild to moderate psoriasis with one showing beneficial effects 50 and the other showing no benefit over placebo. 51 There are numerous other non-medicated topical moisturizer compounds and formulations available; depending on the individual product, they can be applied up to several times daily. The goal of treatment with these agents is to provide and retain moisture in the stratum corneum; these agents are thought to function by forming a film on the skin surface to help retain moisture.…”

“…Clinical studies on the use of Aloe vera preparations in plaque psoriasis are few in number; Syed et al (1996) and Choonhakarn et al (2010) agree on its efficacy in topical applications, reporting improvement of PASI and DLQI scores (more than with placebo, but less than with steroids); but there is also conflicting data Paulsen et al (2005). Therefore, although there are some promising data, clinical effectiveness needs more scientific confirmation.…”
