A dual approach to assessing collection development and acquisitions for academic libraries

Abstract: With a growing interest in evaluating the effectiveness of libraries, it is increasingly important that libraries find efficient ways to evaluate the collection development and acquisitions process. This requires a dual approach to explore both what was collected and actually used and also what was not collected which should have been. This study presents a way that both of these areas can be studied for smaller academic libraries and suggests ways these results can be interpreted and used to reallocate scarce… Show more

“…With an overwhelming interest in and need for effective evaluation, academic libraries are struggling to find the most effective ways to evaluate the content of electronic resources and their use, when deciding on acquisitions for their collections. Usually this can be achieved in two ways, by evaluating both what was collected and actually used, and also what was not collected and should have been (Danielson, 2012). We could combine both, as we had a clear situation before joining the consortia and after.…”

“…Une future piste de recherche est de voir l'utilisation même de cette collection. Je me suis ici intéressée à ce que certaines bibliothèques offraient à leurs usagers en termes de monographies dans leurs collections courantes, mais, comme le souligne Danielson (2012), il serait intéressant de considérer l'utilisation même des documents et les demandes non rencontrées des usagers (telles que révélées par le prêt entre bibliothèques, par exemple).…”

“…Moreover,Pastine (1996) also enumerated a number of methodologies in literature, which have received some acceptance and use in academic and research libraries viz; Quantitative methods and Qualitative methods. In this context,Carrigan (1996);Danielson (2012), argues, "For a balanced assessment of collection development and acquisitions evaluating both use and ILL statistics is indispensable." On the other hand, Andrews,Monday & Williams (2006, as cited in…”
