The increased global concern on environmental protection has made researchers focus their attention on new and more efficient methods of pollutant removal. In this research, novel nanocomposite adsorbents,i.e., magnetic hydroxyapatite (Fe 3 O 4 @HA) and magnetic hydroxyapatite β-cyclodextrin (Fe 3 O 4 @HA-CD) were synthesized and used for heavy metal removal. The adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, VSM, and SEM. In order to investigate the effect of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) removal efficiency, adsorption results of nine metal ions were compared for both adsorbents. β-CD showed the most increasing effect for Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ removal, so these two ions were selected for further studies. The effect of diverse parameters including pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption process was discussed. The optimum pH was 6 and adsorption equilibrium was achieved after 1 hr. Adsorption kinetic data were well fitted by pseudo-second-order model proposing that metal ions were adsorbed via chemical reaction. Adsorption isotherm was best described by the Langmuir model, and maximum adsorption capacity for Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ was 100.00 and 66.66 (mg/g), respectively. Desorption experiment was also done, and the most efficient eluent used for desorption of metal ions was EDTA (0.001 M) with 91% and 88% of Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ release, respectively. Recyclability studies also showed a 19% decrease in the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent after five cycles of regeneration. Therefore, the synthesized adsorbents were recognized as potential candidates for heavy metal adsorption applications.

Magnetic mesoporous silica nanocomposite, Fe3O4@MCM‐41, was prepared and functionalized with N‐(2‐aminoethyl)‐3‐aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPS). Then Schiff base grafted nanoparticles were synthesized by the condensation of 5,5'‐methylene bis (salicylaldehyde) and then benzhydrazide with Fe3O4@MCM‐41‐AEAPS. Finally, by adding Cu (CH3COOH)2.H2O, the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) functionalized with Cu (II) Schiff base complex were synthesized. The new organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposite was characterized by FT‐IR, PXRD, AAS, BET, TGA, VSM, FE‐SEM, HRTEM and EDX techniques. Then, the performance of this copper based magnetic nanocatalyst was investigated for the synthesis of 5‐substituted 1H‐tetrazole derivatives using one pot three‐component reactions of various aldehydes, hydroxyl amine hydrochloride and sodium azide. The catalyst can be easily isolated from the reaction mixture by applying an external magnet and reused for at least 5 times without significant loss in catalytic activity. Also, the antibacterial activity of the streptomycin loaded magnetic nanoparticles against Gram‐positive (S. aureus) and Gram‐negative (E. coli) bacteria in the presence and absence of a magnetic field were studied. Results revealed that when these materials exposed to the magnetic field, bacteriostatic activity of nanocomposites was increased. Furthermore, the enzyme immobilization ability of the synthesized compounds was investigated and the results showed that these nanoparticles efficiently immobilized amylase enzyme.

A self-assembly approach for the design of multifunctional nanomaterials consisting of different nanoparticles (gold, iron oxide, and lanthanide-doped LiYF ) is developed. This modular system takes advantage of the light-responsive supramolecular host-guest chemistry of β-cyclodextrin and arylazopyrazole, which enables the dynamic and reversible self-assembly of particles to spherical nanoparticle aggregates in aqueous solution. Due to the magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, the aggregates can be manipulated by an external magnetic field leading to the formation of linear structures. As a result of the integration of upconversion nanoparticles, the aggregates are additionally responsive to near-infrared light and can be redispersed by use of the upconversion effect. By varying the nanoparticle and linker concentrations the composition, size, shape, and properties of the multifunctional nanoparticle aggregates can be fine-tuned.
