A Facile Electrochemical Sensor for Nonylphenol Determination Based on the Enhancement Effect of Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide

Abstract: A facile electrochemical sensor for the determination of nonylphenol (NP) was fabricated in this work. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which formed a bilayer on the surface of the carbon paste (CP) electrode, displayed a remarkable enhancement effect for the electrochemical oxidation of NP. Moreover, the oxidation peak current of NP at the CTAB/CP electrode demonstrated a linear relationship with NP concentration, which could be applied in the direct determination of NP. Some experimental parameters wer… Show more

“…We obtained a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 μM (S/N = 3) for 4-NP using the following linear regression equation: I(μA) = 0.102 C(μM) + 0.0087 (R 2 = 0.9980). Compared with the other electrodes reported for 4-NP [1,27,39,40,41,42,43], the poly([V 2 C 4 (mim) 2 ]Br 2 )/GCE exhibited satisfactory analytical parameters (Table 1). To demonstrate the advantage of poly([V 2 C 4 (mim) 2 ]Br 2 ) sensor, we also investigated the linearity of a traditional cross-linker-based poly(EGDMA) sensor for 4-NP (Figure 7B).…”

“…Nonylphenol ethoxylates are widely used for manufacturing various commercial products such as detergents, lubricating oil, paints, pesticides, and emulsifier, etc [1]. Nonylphenol ethoxylates degrade to produce 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) in an aquatic environment [2].…”

“…They can not only modify the properties of the electrode surface, but also greatly affect the electrochemical process [ 27 ]. It had also been reported that surfactants could remarkably increase the enrichment ability of electrochemical sensors to nonionic organic compounds, such as nonyl phenol [ 28 ], phenol [ 29 ], and bisphenol A [ 30 ]. Therefore, surfactants were introduced in this method to increase the sensitivity of the sensor.…”

“…A cetyltrimethylammonium bromide was used to form a hydrophobic bilayer on the surface of a carbon paste electrode. This layer interacted with the alkyl part of the pollutant and was applied to preconcentrate the analyte [101]. A second device is a biosensor based on the use of reduced graphene and ss-DNA.…”
