A Facile Molding Method of Continuous Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites and Its Mechanical Property

Abstract: The mechanical properties of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (C-FRTP) composites are commonly lower than those of continuous fiber-reinforced thermosetting plastic (C-FRP) composites. We have developed a new molding method for C-FRTP. In this study, pre-impregnated materials were successfully prepared by polymer solution impregnation method and, finally, C-FRTP was fabricated. The viscosity of the thermoplastic matrix was decreased to approximately 3dPa×s, the same level of epoxy, and the fiber volum… Show more

“…For this purpose, the industrial waste was cut into 100 mm × 100 mm pieces and subjected to solvolysis. The fibre recovery process was developed at the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology at Shinshu University [ 6 , 7 ]. In the first step, the surrounding thermoset matrix is carbonised under a protective inert gas atmosphere at 400 °C.…”

“…In 2013, Tethers Unlimited proposed the concept project "SpiderFab", which combines 3D printing technology with the aerospace industry to manufacture large space structures in space like a spider web [9]. Compared with thermosetting composites, the thermoplastic composites have shown higher strength, longer life, better corrosion resistance and green recyclability [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. The applications of high-performance thermoplastic resins such as PEEK have been widely studied.…”

“…Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFTPCs) have received tremendous attention due to the advantages of having high strength, long life, corrosion resistance, and green recyclability [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. CFTPCs have been widely used in aerospace, transportation, and high precision processing equipment.…”
