A Facile One-Pot Synthesis of Water-Soluble, Patchy Fe3O4-Au Nanoparticles for Application in Radiation Therapy

Abstract: A facile one-pot synthesis route for the preparation of water-soluble, biocompatible patchy Fe3O4-Au nanoparticles (Fe3O4-Au pNPs) was developed. Biocompatibility was attained through surface functionalization with 1-methyl-3-(dodecylphosphonic acid) imidazolium bromide. The morphology, composition, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the Fe3O4-Au pNPs were investigated by conducting experiments with transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and supercon… Show more

“…Other possible application of magnetite-gold nano-conjugates refers to their use in cancer radiotherapy, following their activation with different types of radiation: ionizing radiation (IR) [140,141], near-infrared (NIR) radiation [134,142] and radiofrequency (RF) [143] radiation. Radiotherapy mediated by nanoparticles has been considered as an approach that overcomes the resistance of tumor cells to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy [144][145][146][147].…”

“…During the procedure, the nucleation should be properly regulated to generate heterogeneous nucleation on a particular crystalline phase around the seed NPs [ 53 ]. Klein et al [ 46 ] developed a simple one-pot synthesis method for the preparation of Fe 3 O 4 @Au DNPs using a sonication process. In their analysis, Fe 3 O 4 @Au DNPs were achieved by the co-precipitation of Fe 3 O 4 NPs in an aqueous solution of HAuCl 4 .…”

“…Fe 3 O 4 -Au nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 -Au pNPs, 12.5 nm) significantly enhanced ROS levels in MCF-7 and A549 cells and sensitized both kinds of cells to X-rays. However, in MCF-10A noncancer cells, Fe 3 O 4 -Au pNPs only slightly promoted the production of ROS and ultimately failed to exhibit a radiosensitization effect [35]. α-Fe 2 O 3 coated with ultrasmall gold nanoseeds (α-Fe 2 O 3 @Au, 49 nm) sensitized 4T1 cells to radiotherapy through ROS generation.…”
