A focus group study of veterinarians' and pet owners' perceptions of veterinarian-client communication in companion animal practice

Abstract: Results suggested that several factors are involved in providing effective veterinarian-client communication and that breakdowns in communication can have an adverse effect on the veterinarian-client relationship.

“…The One Health concept is a system-based approach to interactions of human, animal and environmental health that encourages transdisciplinary efforts to improve health for all species and the environment (Osburn and others 2009, Cantas and Suer 2014, Travis and others 2014). As applied to the problem of antimicrobial resistance, a One Health approach involves moving beyond polarised debates about whether greater blame should be placed on antimicrobial use in animal agriculture , or human healthcare (Cox and Jones 2006, Coe and others 2007, 2008, Cox and others 2009, Coe and others 2010, Cox and Popken 2010, 2014, Ciorba and others 2015, Huijbers and others 2015) to instead developing collaborative models of shared antimicrobial stewardship and surveillance across human, animal and environmental sectors.…”

“…Although there has been no research to date on the specific communication needs of veterinary behavior clients, the results of a recent study of veterinary oncology clients indicate that the manner in which information is communicated is influential in both facilitating comprehension and in creating an environment from which these clients derive the support needed to successfully cope with their pet's condition (Stoewen et al, 2014). Breakdowns in communication can have a negative effect on the client-veterinarian relationship (Coe et al, 2008), and evidence from studies conducted in human medicine indicates that effective communication between clinicians and clients improves outcomes, increases adherence to treatment recommendations, and improves the satisfaction level of both the client and clinician (Abood, 2007;Erickson et al, 2005;Glynn and Levensky, 2009). Courses in client communication have only been recently integrated into veterinary college curriculums; consequently, many veterinarians will have developed communication skills through practice without the benefit of formal instruction (Adams and Frankel, 2007).…”

“…The process of obtaining consent entails a special form of communication that involves a particular form of emotional engagement at a critical time, and in veterinary medicine this is balanced against a financial commitment and ‘willingness to pay’. Several studies have evaluated the veterinarian and client communication (Cornell and Kopcha 2007, Coe and others 2008). This study provided a depth of understanding of client's perceptions of the process.…”
