A Fuzzy Logic Approach for Separation Assurance and Collision Avoidance for Unmanned Aerial Systems

Abstract: In the coming years, operations in low altitude airspace will vastly increase as the capabilities and applications of small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) continue to multiply. Therefore, finding solutions to managing sUAS in highly congested airspace will facilitate sUAS operations. In this study, a fuzzy logic-based approach was used to help mitigate the risk of collisions between aircraft using separation assurance and collision avoidance techniques. The system was evaluated for its effectiveness at mitigat… Show more

“…In this situation DAA systems should give directive maneuvers, such that the sUAS regains its previous state. Both of these functions are related to a well clear notion, which is mainly viewed as protection volume around UAS, referred to as well clear volume (WCV) [9], [35], [36]. This volume can be specified by spatial thresholds, temporal thresholds, or both at the same time, referred to as separation minima in this work.…”

“…The proposed method predicts the distance by using fuzzy time crowding to identify the intentions of a human being walking on a specific track, and this information is later used to avoid rear-end collisions. Cook et al 17 present a fuzzy logic-based controller to alleviate the risk of collisions in many Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (SUAS). Moon et al 18 propose an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system comprising different driving modes according to the real-time road environment to avoid collisions and to improve driver comfort.…”

“…The avoidance controller was developed with inspiration from the methods used in Ref. [13,14]. It uses a similar logic based on the intersection point of the UAS.…”
