A G3-PLC simulator for access networks

SummaryPower lines present a more challenging communication environment compared to other media. Impedance mismatches and network branches render the channel frequency‐selective, leading to strong inter‐symbol interference (ISI). Moreover, devices connected to the power grid introduce impulsive noise on the network. Such factors may degrade the system performance drastically. Therefore, robust coding and modulation schemes are required to increase the communication reliability. Furthermore, multiple access communication allows many users to share a common medium to enhance the systems' throughput. This paper examines the behaviour of two schemes, turbo codes and multi‐fold turbo codes, against a two‐user adder channel under power‐line conditions operating below 500 kHz. Both schemes employ distinct codes for each user and make use of orthogonal frequency‐division multiplexing (OFDM) to cope with the ISI. Three configurations of a low‐voltage (LV) power‐line outdoor network are considered. Results obtained through simulations show that a gain, up to 3 dB, can be obtained for both users using the multi‐fold turbo coding over the conventional turbo coding. The effect of iterative decoding on the performance of both schemes is also reported.

Building real Smart Metering and Smart Grid networks is very expensive and time-consuming and also it is impossible to install different technologies in the same environment only for comparison. Therefore, simulation and experimental pilot measurements are an easy, economical, and time-affordable solution for a first comparison and evaluation of different technologies and solutions. The local area networks (LAN) are the core of Smart Metering and Smart Grid networks. The two predominant technologies are mostly sufficient for LAN networks, Power Line Communication (PLC), and radio frequency (RF) solutions. For PLC it is hard to allow prediction of the behaviour. Performance assessment for point-to-point connection is easy, but for complex PLC networks with repeaters it is quite expensive. Therefore, a simulation is an easy, fast, and cheap solution for understanding the grid configuration, influence of particular topological components, and performance possibilities. Simulation results can, thus, provide material for the design of a telecommunication infrastructure for Smart Metering. This paper presents results of such a simulation study. It is based on realistic PLC channel model implementation in Network Simulator 3, our modification and extension of this implementation for our use case scenario. It uses Shannon’s formula to calculate theoretical maximum channel capacity. In particular, it provides channel capacity and achievable distances of broadband PLC (BB-PLC). In this article we also exploit our novel idea of simple performance assessment of broadband PLC communication via simulation. It is supposed to be used to understand, evaluate, and test the grid configuration before deployment.

Abstract-PLC is gaining prominence as a solution for Smart Grid developments. However, several aspects still require further research and analysis. Among the different solutions, PRIME (PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution) standard is one of the most popular and extended implementations. This paper analyses the performance of an Auto Meter Reading (AMR) process for a PRIME PLC network regarding two aspects. Firstly, the impact caused by the polling strategy utilized. In particular, the number of connections that the Master Node manages simultaneously is studied. Secondly, the influence of the positions of the Switch Nodes in the network is examined. The time required to read all the meters in the network is utilized as performance metric.In order to replicate the performance of a PRIME network, a co-simulation framework that combines Matlab and OMNeT++ has been used. This architecture allows to take into account both physical phenomena and control and application message management. Simulated topologies represent a general European low-voltage network. Results highlight the importance of selecting an adequate number of simultaneous connections in order to optimize the use of the channel, as well as the impact of the logical structure of the network.
