A generalized model management system for mathematical programming

Abstract: This paper examines mathematical programming software in the context of model management and decision support. The concept of a model management system (MMS) is introduced and compared to traditional modeling systems. An MMS is seen as a much more generalized software system that requires the confluence of existmg operations research, database management, and artificial intelligence techniques. By incorporatmg powerful, abstraction-based representation structures, an MMS can support multiple levels of model ab… Show more

“…The terms model library [31], the Network for Computational Modelling in the Social and Ecological Sciences (CoMSES Net) Computational Model Library (CML) [33], and model bank [34] are treated as having the same meaning in this study and are referred to as "model base," which is an organizational collection of models contained in an electronic storage medium accessible to users and programs [35]. The models in the model base are expected to be reused as building blocks for more complex systems, provided that they can be linked together in a meaningful way (matching the variables, scales, etc.)…”

“…These functions are analogous to those of a database management system, where the objects of interest are data records instead of models. Thus, a model base management system (MBMS) should be able to store and manipulate models in ways similar to the methods database management systems (DBMS) store and manipulate data [34]. Therefore, it is not surprising to see the strong influence of database technology in the creation of model management systems [35,40].…”

“…There is a consensus among researchers (e.g., [6,4,27,16]) that decision support and modeling systems should support the entire modeling life-cycle. In recent years there has been much research on the model management component of a decision support system, aimed at model representation and manipulation.…”
