A Geospatial Approach for Analysis of Drought Impacts on Vegetation Cover and Land Surface Temperature in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq

Abstract: Drought is a common event in Iraq’s climate, and the country has severely suffered from drought episodes in the last two decades. The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) is geographically situated in the semi-arid zone in Iraq, whose water resources have been limited in the last decades and mostly shared with other neighboring countries. To analyze drought impacts on the vegetation cover and the land surface temperature in the KRI for a span of 20 years from 1998 to 2017, remote sensing (RS) and Geographical Inform… Show more

“…Crops differ in their temperature tolerance thresholds (Marchin et al, 2022). Increasing LST also leads to an increase of evapotranspiration and consequently increases the irrigation water required for crops (Gaznayee et al, 2022). UHI also leads to negative impacts on the economy, while energy use will increase in wealthier areas through increased use of air conditioners.…”

“…The Mann–Kendall (M–K) test is a nonparametric trend test, which is often used to determine the significance of changes in temperature, precipitation, and other factors over a long time series, mainly through the standard statistic Z and confidence level α to determine the significance of the data [ 50 , 51 ]. Suppose the LST time series are , and they are independently identically distributed, for any and , the statistic S is calculated: where is the symbolic function whose function equation is: …”

“…Erbil, Duhok, Sulaimani, and Halabja are the four governorates that make up the KRI, which is placed at 37 • 38 N 46 • 35 E and has an overall area of 51,173.65 km 2 . The KRI is dry and hot in the summer and wet and cold in the winter [39,40]. The KRI is used as the model boundary in this research due to the region's similarity in terms of climate, physiography, and forest structure and composition [39].…”

“…The Zagros Mountains are characterized by significant seasonal variations in temperature and precipitation, with dry summers and wet winters. The mountains of the KRI might get 1200 mm of precipitation annually, the most of which falls from October to May, the wettest months [40]. According to predictions on future climatic circumstances, the eco-regional features of the research area will make it ideal for the spread and growth of Pistacia.…”
