A Guide to the Dagum Distributions

Abstract: In a series of papers in the 1970s, Camilo Dagum proposed several variants of a new model for the size distribution of personal income. This Chapter traces the genesis of the Dagum distributions in applied economics and points out parallel developments in several branches of the applied statistics literature. It also provides interrelations with other statistical distributions as well as aspects that are of special interest in the income distribution field, including Lorenz curves and the Lorenz order and ineq… Show more

“…It appeared under the name of the Dagum (1977) distribution in studies of income, wage and wealth distributions. For an excellent survey on its genesis and empirical applications, see Kleiber and Kotz (2003) and Kleiber (2008). It is known as the inverse Burr distribution (see, e.g., Klugman et al 1998) in the actuarial literature and as the kappa distribution in the meteorological area (Mielke, 1973).…”

“…Of late Dagum distribution has been investigated from a reliability point of view and used to analyze survival data (see Domma et al, [3], [4]). Kleiber and Kotz [5] and Kleiber [6] provided an exhaustive review on the origin of the Dagum model and its applications. Domma et al [3] estimated the parameters of Dagum distribution with censored samples.…”
