A High Frequency Dielectrophoresis Cytometer for Continuous Flow Biological Cells Refinement

Abstract: This paper presents a microfluidic radiofrequency device operating at a few hundred MHz, which is able to sort biological cells. It uses a non-invasive and label-free technic based on intracellular dielectric specificities of biological cells. The sorting principle relies on a dynamic dielectrophoresis (DEP) deviation resulting from the interaction between a high frequency electric signal and the cell cytoplasm content. Driven in a microfluidic channel by a continuous flow, cells are individually deflected fro… Show more

“…UHF-DEP is a very promising tool with great potential to discriminate cells according to their internal biological properties. Hence, from the identification of UHF-DEP signa-tures, we can see the perspective to develop a cell sorting device for isolating cancer stem cells [31]. In the future, the early detection of CSC subpopulation in a glioma tumor with a UHF-DEP approach could have a prognosis value on therapeutic response and might allow adaption of a therapeutic strategy following diagnosis.…”

“…To do so, a dedicated electrode has been designed with three different sections with increasing slopes (35°, 45° and 60°). Hence, such UHF-DEP cytometer would be able to separate a cell suspension into four subpopulations driven at the end of the device where four outlets have been implemented to collect sorted cells [19].…”
