A huge pancreatic lipoma mimicking a well-differentiated liposarcoma: A case report and systematic literature review

Abstract: BACKGROUND Pancreatic lipomas are thought to be very rare. Lipomas are usually easy to identify on imaging, particularly via computed tomography (CT). But sometimes it’s quite difficult to distinguish a lipoma from a well-liposarcoma without histologic result. CASE SUMMARY Here, we present a case of pancreatic lipoma in a 59-year-old female. She was asymptomatic and had no medical history of note. CT and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a m… Show more

“…Pancreatic lipoma was first described by Bigard et al in 1989 as a hypoechoic pancreatic mass lesion on ultrasound examination [ 6 ], and the first computed tomography diagnosis of pancreatic lipoma was reported by Di Maggio et al in 1996 [ 7 ]. Since the first reported case, the number of case reports of pancreatic lipoma does not exceed 200 cases [ 8 ].…”

“…Surgical resection of lipomas is considered in cases of suspected liposarcomas with invasion of other organs or the presence of solid components [ 5 ]. On the other hand, cases of overlapping tumors between PLs and other pancreatic tumors are extremely rare; only one case of PL with benign intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm has been reported to date [ 6 ].…”
