A Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov method for time-implicit multidimensional hydrodynamics

Abstract: This work is a continuation of our efforts to develop an efficient implicit solver for multidimensional hydrodynamics for the purpose of studying important physical processes in stellar interiors, such as turbulent convection and overshooting. We present an implicit solver that results from the combination of a Jacobian-free Newton-Krylov method and a preconditioning technique tailored to the inviscid, compressible equations of stellar hydrodynamics. We assess the accuracy and performance of the solver for bot… Show more

“…This simplified treatment might be inadequate in some cases. Ongoing studies aim at improving the theoretical modeling and understanding of convection in stellar interiors (e.g., Meakin & Arnett 2007;Arnett et al 2009Arnett et al , 2015Viallet et al 2013Viallet et al , 2015Viallet et al , 2016.…”

“…However in this work, we adjust p 0 so that the initial peak Mach number is M s = 0.28, as in DFGY2007. Therefore, in addition to verifying MUSIC through comparison to a range of ILES, conventional LES, and DNS simulations, we can also investigate possible compressive effects through comparison to Viallet et al (2016).…”

“…In the reduced speed of sound technique (RSST) and related methods, the speed of sound is artificially reduced by including a suitable scaling factor in the continuity equation, reducing the restriction on the size of the time step (Rempel 2005;Hotta et al 2012;Wang et al 2015;Takeyama et al 2017;Iijima et al 2019). Finally, there are fully implicit time integration codes for the compressible Euler equations (Viallet et al 2011;Kifonidis & Müller 2012;Viallet et al 2015;Goffrey et al 2017). The MUSIC code uses fully implicit time integration for the compressible Euler equations, which therefore allows for arbitrarily large time steps.…”
